16 ACADEMICS FROM EMU IN THE ‘MOST INFLUENTIAL SCIENTISTS IN THE WORLD’ LIST OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), ranked first in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and second among universities in the Republic of Türkiye in terms of research quality within the Times Higher Education (601-800 band), and the first and only university in the TRNC to be included in the QS World University Rankings (611-620 band), continues to reap the rewards of its long-standing investments in scientific research activities. EMU, known for its high-quality education and teaching, takes pride in having 16 of its academics listed among the “Most Influential Scientists in the World” list.
16 academics from EMU have achieved recognition as some of the most frequently cited researchers globally, earning a place on the “Most Influential Scientists in the World” list. The list was compiled through a study led by Stanford University in collaboration with a team of American and Dutch scientists. Using data from Scopus and with backing from the major academic publisher Elsevier B.V., the ranking features 223,152 scientists, placing them in the top 2% worldwide. This year, the number of scientists included in the list grew by 12,954 compared to the previous year.

16 academics from EMU have been featured in the 2023 edition of the “Most Influential Scientists in the World” database. The number of scientists from universities in the Republic of Türkiye on the list has grown since last year, totalling 1,533. On the other hand, 92 scientists from South Cyprus were also featured in the list
The report shows that Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe ranked 2,130th globally among the most impactful scientists and was recognized as the 14th most influential scientist in Türkiye. In the field of tourism, Prof. Dr. Karatepe also claimed the top position in both the annual database and the career-long impact ranking for both the island and Türkiye. Furthermore, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Övgün was ranked as Türkiye’s 58th most influential scientist, while Assoc. Prof. Dr. Babak Safei and Prof. Dr. Salih Katırcıoğlu were ranked 76th and 82nd, respectively.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hasan Kömürcügil, Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Akeem Adeyemi Oladipo are ranked among the top 200 scientists in Türkiye. Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arran Fernandez are listed in the top 600, while Prof. Dr. Seyedhabibollah Mazharimousavi and Hasan Demirel are within the top 720. Prof. Dr. Osman Kükrer, Prof. Dr. Omar Mustafa, and Prof. Dr. Mehmet Ali Özarslan rank in the top 1,250, and Prof. Dr. Müberra Koşar and Prof. Dr. Benedek N. Nagy are in the top 1,550. All these scholars are positioned in the top 2% of scientists globally.

Moreover, the report’s Career Impact List featured 11 academics from EMU. Prof. Dr. Osman M. Karatepe is ranked among the top 11 thousand scientists worldwide and 14th in Türkiye. Prof. Dr. Salih Katırcıoğlu is listed in the top 48 thousand globally and 102nd in Türkiye, while Prof. Dr. Nazım Mahmudov ranks in the top 53 thousand worldwide and 115th in Türkiye. Prof. Dr. Hasan Kömürcügil is placed among the top 84 thousand scientists globally and 188th in Türkiye. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Övgün is ranked in the top 131 thousand worldwide and 334th in Türkiye. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Babak Safaei and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Akeem Adeyemi Oladipo are in the top 142 thousand and 192 thousand globally, respectively, and both are 372nd in Türkiye. Prof. Dr. Osman Kükrer is among the top 206 thousand scientists worldwide and 595th in Türkiye. Prof. Dr. Hasan Demirel is in the top 265 thousand globally and 803rd in Türkiye. Former faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kadri Hacıoğlu is listed in the top 359 thousand worldwide and 1031st in Türkiye, and Prof. Dr. Benedek N. Making remarks on the topic, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Hasan Kılıç conveyed that success is never a coincidence and stressed that the number of EMU academics appearing on the top 2% of the Stanford University’s “Most Influential Scientists in the World” list has been increasing each year. Prof. Dr. Kılıç said; “The success of our academics across diverse fields demonstrates that EMU's scientific strength align with global standards. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the scholars who have attained this recognition and hope their accomplishments will inspire future generations”.
