U.K. based higher education ranking magazine Times Higher Education (THE) announced the 2018 – 2019 Academic Year World University Rankings. 1,258 universities from 79 different countries were listed in THE 2018 -2019 World University Rankings and once again Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) from the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is the only university from TRNC appearing on the said list. Thus, having been listed in the World University Rankings for the 3rd time since the 2017 Academic Year, EMU maintains its outstanding success.
Expressing his honor and pride in EMU’s remarkable achievement, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam stated that EMU ranks within the 601-800 Band in the world rankings of the said list. Putting forth the fact that success is never a coincidence and EMU continues to grow and improve, Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam concluded his words by saying that EMU is the best in education throughout the island and one of the bests in the world.
Some of the best world universities including Oxford, California Institute of Technology, Stanford, Cambridge, MIT, Harvard and Princeton also featured on the list. The ranking considers factors such as teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, citations from academic publications, international faculty, number of international students, social activities and civic involvement. EMU is the first and only Turkish Cypriot university to appear on the list. This year only 18 out of the 200 universities in North Cyprus and Turkey were listed.
EMU Proves that Boundaries in Education Have Been Lifted Universally
Once again with its success, EMU has once again proven in international platforms that education overcomes embargoes. Having appeared in the Turkish Universities category in the previous lists during the former rankings, EMU now features in THE World Rankings list for the first time as a Northern Cyprus university. EMU also takes pride in being the only university from TRNC having been listed in the World University Rankings since 2016 – 2017 Academic Year.
EMU Ranks 6th Along with İTU and METU among Turkish Universities
A total of 23 universities from Turkey and 2 universities from South Cyprus appear on the list. EMU has been listed within the top 13 universities from Turkey among other 1,000 Turkish universities and it co-ranks 6th along with İstanbul Technical University and Middle East Technical University. Sabancı University, Koç University, Bilkent University, Boğaziçi University, Hacettepe University, İstanbul Technical University, Middle East Technical University, Anadolu University, Atılım University, Erciyes University, Gebze Technical University, İstanbul University, Akdeniz University, Ankara University, Bahçeşehir University, Çukurova University, Dokuz Eylül University, Gazi University, İzmir High Technology Institute, Marmara University, 19 Mayıs University, TOBB Economy and Technology University, Yeditepe University are universities from Turkey managing to appear in the said rankings. On the other hand, Cyprus Technology University and University of Cyprus from South Cyprus appear within the top 500 universities in the list.
