Research Focus of EMU Faculty of Pharmacy

Research in the Faculty of Pharmacy is focused on the following scientific disciplines: 

Medicinal Chemistry

The design, synthesis, structure identification, and biological activity screening of original compounds to treat neurodegenerative diseases. In particular, alternative options have been assessed for the treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. In the last decade, hundreds of novel molecules have been synthesized and published in medicinal chemistry related scientific journals. 

Pharmacognosy

Chemical composition analyses, biological activity analyses and botanical investigations of plants, antibacterial, anticholinesterase/antibutylesterase and anticancer, antioxidant activities, in silico analyses of the plants extracts and analyses in cell culture, isolation, structure evaluation and chromatographic analyses of chemical compounds within the plant products.      

Pharmacology

Pharmacological actions of choline and CDP-choline, pain transmission and analgesic medications, inflammation, intrathecal drug delivery and safety, in-vitro testing of drug effects on cancer and endothelial cell lines, endothelial dysfunction, anti-angiogenic treatments, antinociceptive responses using tail-flick test, and medication adherence. 

Clinical Pharmacy

Rational drug use, emerging medications in asthma, novel peptic ulcer treatment strategies. 

Drug Formulation and Delivery

Preparing new, easy-to-use, and safe pediatric dosage forms by masking the bitter taste of drugs using various technologies such as the formation of inclusion complexes with beta cyclodextrins. In-vitro equivalence studies to evaluate the dissolution rates and release profiles of solid dosage forms, including marketed drug products. To increase the solubility and dissolution rate of active substances by preparing solid dispersions. Development of innovative formulations for oral and topical drug delivery, with a particular focus on enhancing the bioavailability of low-solubility drugs, natural compounds, and combination therapies for the treatment of various diseases, including parasitic protozoa infections. The preparation and characterization of polymeric nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems and stimuli-responsive drug delivery forms which can further enhance drug efficacy and bioavailability through the use of a Quality by Design (QbD) approach. 

Pharmaceutical Biochemistry

Antioxidant and anticancer activities of plants and plant-derived molecules, analyzing the anticancer effects of novel compounds that can potentially have are also among the research interests

Pharmaceutical Microbiology

Investigating antimicrobial activities and anti-biofilm characteristics of natural products or synthetic chemicals, mechanisms of antibacterial resistance among clinical isolates, diagnosis of clinical bacterial isolates by molecular methods.
